Welcome to the Success Architect, where we don't just build homes, we build legacies. I'm your host, Jake Lewendal, custom home builder and coach. Each week, I sit down with builders and entrepreneurs who are ready to 10x their business, their health and their mindset. This is where blueprints become breakthroughs. Let's get to work. What's up, guys? Welcome back to The Success Architect. So today we're going to try something a little bit new. We are going to do some capsules and we're going to do this sort of thing. It's basically a mini series here, maybe once a quarter or something like that. Today is the first of five in the capsule. These will be short episodes to try to help you as a listener implement this thing that we are talking about in order to make yourself better. at the specific item we are discussing. For this capsule, we're gonna be talking about leadership. So I'm going to discuss each day a different law of leadership that I really hope you can take into your business, into your personal life, into everything you do, and just become a better version of yourself. And I wanna make these very easy to implement and simple to actually bring into your life to make changes today. Today is day one. Today we're going to talk about the law of ownership. And many of the listeners on here have probably read the book Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. And that's where this comes from. So the key points we're going to talk about today is first that ownership is The responsibility for outcomes, not excuses. It's also not responsibility on how the process gets done. It's responsibility for outcomes. We're going to talk about fixing systems instead of blaming people and circumstances. And finally, the dichotomy, which Jaco and Leif talk about in their second book, about how owning the outcome is very important, but we can't steal the ownership from our team. If you as the leader are so extreme in your ownership that you own every single little mess up that you have in the business, it doesn't leave any room for your team to actually have ownership. So first off, responsibility for outcomes and not excuses. The way to do this is basically looking at everything going on in the business. And any time a situation comes up, looking at it in the realm of, okay, How could that have not happened if I take ownership for this? So a great example for me is recently, this last month, we wanted to pour concrete early in the month because we are really light on production and cashflow right now in the business. And by getting concrete on the ground, it increases production, it increases cashflow, which helps the business. The concrete got pushed back 25 days throughout the month through various certain things. And I got pissed about it last week and have been talking to a couple team members about it. And after a minute of kind of bitching about it, I looked at myself and said, Hey, where could I have done better here? And the simple truth is that I didn't communicate what I want for the business to the team. I didn't give them a specific outcome that I needed concrete on the ground on say the 5th instead of the 25th so that we could bill and have production for the month. And this all came down to my communication and my clarity with the team. Clarity is one that we're going to talk about here on like day three. So that's where I took extreme ownership and looked at, Hey, what did I not do in order for the team to perform in order to hit their outcomes? And I'm not taking the ownership from them. They have ownership of creating outcomes, but they can't own an outcome they don't know doesn't exist. We don't know what we don't know. So this is the main deal, fixing systems. This is doing SOPs, things like that. But again, people don't know what they don't know. So as the leader, we have to communicate. We have to create clarity. We have to give these systems to the right person. And we have to be very specific with the outcome that we want. And that goes into how can you as a leader implement this into your life today? So first off, what I want you to do is think of a scenario that happened this week where you can take 100% ownership. It's 100% my fault audit. So what is on you? What did you tolerate? What standards did you not communicate that led to a result that was subpar? Next off, I want you to consider your ownership script. So once you figure that out, you figure out the SOP or the communication that's going to happen in order to transfer ownership, then the script is very simple. You own this. Here's what winning looks like. Here are the guardrails. Bring me options, not just problems. This allows your teammates to take ownership of said thing and move forward to get the result that you as the leader want. So do me a favor, take the challenge, find a frustration that you had today, Own it 100% and find out where you did not take ownership and you're getting pissed about it for no reason and find a way to transfer that ownership to the right person at the right time with the right clarity. Enjoy, everyone take the challenge today and I'm excited to talk to you guys for day two, which will drop later this week. See you in the next one. Thanks for tuning in to The Success Architect.
